Small RFID Transponders and Antennas Enhance Security for Medical Devices

FEIG Electronics and smart-TEC, in cooperation together have developed a new medical device RFID solution for use in laser scalpels, ensuring patient safety. The transponder is integrated into the connector of the laser and the application incorporates an extremely robust and temperature resistant RFID tag.  The transponders can be sterilized via EtO (Ethylenoxide) or pressurized steam.  The RFID transponder maintains data about usage and sterilization to increase both patient security and error prevention.  If the surgeon attempts to use a laser which had not been sterilized since the previous use, the unit will not function.  Added patient safety is one key driver in utilizing RFID in medical applications...
